Anatomy of a Handbag Part 3 – decorative & fashionable accessories & accents for your handbag

24 Jul
The first two parts to the Anatomy of a Handbag can be found here.
This is a comprehensive guide for the accents you may want on your handbag. Embellishments or attachments that make a difference in the appearance of any handbag. They can significantly enhance the appearance and fashion appeal of the everyday handbag.
Accents for your handbag
Bling /swarovski crystals/rhinestones/similar shiny stones & studs– This refers to when your handbag has things that shine like crystal rhinestone, sparkling glitter or similar diamond like stones that add totally upscale feel to any handbag. There are an endless array of rhinestones that make a bag stand out and upgrades its appeal. There are several types of manufacturers who make rhinestones, each offers a different level of durability while others look good but are less quality. Swarovski crystals are one the best known types of rhinestones and are the most expensive. There are many more that provide the appearance with a cheaper cost. Bottom line with handbags is that glistening crystal on a handbag provide a certain feel for that bag. Making is classy and expensive looking for what would look like a typical handbag.

Buckles – come in many shapes and styles, oddly when a handbag does have a buckle typically it has no functional value. The designer simply wanted a certain look. Functional buckles have a tendency to be hard to access into a handbag.
That may be the main reason why they are not used for other than decoration.

Buttons – These too have generally no functional value when added to handbags. They are again to create a look. Button as a rule for compartments and openings are never used because they just do not allow quick easy access to handbags and purses.
Charms –  A true new accent are charms. Tassels are a form of charms. But charms have been around women’s necks for hundreds of years. In the last several years they have found their way as accents to handbags. These varied accents are anything from key chains, car key fobs, funny figures, fur balls, plastic items just about anything a designer can come up with and women will buy.  Here is a great article on some of the best charms. Time will tell if charms are just a fad, but currently are all the rage.

Chains – chains used on handbag have very versatile feature set. They can and are used as the handle and decorations. Chains can often set a normal simple looking handbag into a designer style bag.

Corner Protectors & Reinforcements –  These come in a variety of shapes, styles, metal, plastic fabric, just about anything that will provide added protection for the bottom corners of a handbag. Oddly most handbags don’t have corner protectors due to manufacturers not wanting to add the cost believing not adding an enormous amount of functional value. Corner protectors can provide added protection and reinforcement for certain types of handbags. But it really depends on the handbag as slouchy hobo type handbags will have absolutely no benefit for corner protectors while structured handbags like the one pictured below may provide added functional benefit.
Designer Medallion –  Designer Medallions is the quintessential accessory that makes the ordinary bag “the it” bag. From the super luxury handbags of Prada & Gucci, to the luxury of Coach to Micheal Kors and even an unbranded handbag with a medallion can make a woman feel like having luxury on their arm. Medallions and particularly designer medallions indicate the status for which a woman buys a branded handbag. The medallions add a classy luxury feel to the handbag and is on the most sought after accessories for your handbag. It’s the best accent a women can have on their handbag.
Detachable Shoulder Strap –  Handbags that have short handles where you can only carry in the palm of your hand will often have a detachable shoulder strap that will allow you to carry the handbag on your shoulder. This flexibility provides a different dimension to handbag with a shorter strap allowing a women to carry her handbag a couple of ways. Shoulders straps come in many sizes, lengths, thickness, and types. They are versatile and can be clipped on in seconds for a better functional bag.
Feet –  Handbag feet are very common and provide “some” level of protection from wear but I have not found a single handbag that had the feet where it matters.  The purse is so slouchy or not still or structural enough where the feet don’t keep it from touching the surface where you put it. But needless to say it been historical for some structured & stiff handbags a staple in their use, albeit not one that matters necessarily to the handbags look.
Decorative Locks –  For a long time in last 10 years locks on handbags meant luxury but over that time they have been a mark of quality if not price. Locks on handbags offer no functional value but comes in that genre of accents that just make a bag stand out and feel like a luxury handbag.

Snaps & Clasp Closures – for years snap closures were synonymous with handbags. They provided an easy access closure that was durable. However, although snap closures are still used today they are no longer used by the luxury brands as much as they have come to mean less quality and have been used by more cheaper brands. More contemporary handbags have a magnetic clasp and can be fashion on many types of handbags. While clasp closures are going strong in every type of handbag. Luxury to affordable brands and styles use clasp closure extensively.  The difference is snap closure literally go through a loop or half loop and click. While the clasp closure twist to open its flap.
Tassels –  Of all the accents for a handbag one of the most widely used and most versatile is the tassel. It generally has absolutely no functional value to the handbag but to the attachments add an enormous amount of visual excitement are getting a resurrection in a different form.  Tassels have been used to provide a classic stylish look but never looks dated. They come in many shapes sizes, styles and kinds. They have even changed and are being replaced with other attachments that generally have no function value but appeals to the younger female crowd and are called fur accents. Their renaissance has changed tassel to be functional in that they clip part are used to hold keys, small wallets and other items that have a function value.

What is Patent Leather?

8 Aug
Photo of lacquer in liquid form, mixed with wa...

Image via Wikipedia

Patent leather has been treated with lacquer (which is like paint) to give it a glossy surface. Meaning when the manufacturing process is complete the product is given a high gloss shiny finish. Keep in mind that there is genuine leather that has been treated with the lacquer finish and there are synthetic leathers that have been treated with the same type of lacquer as well.

Be careful that when you are ordering handbags you are mindful of whether its real patent leather or faux (artificial) patent leather. Faux or artificial is usually cheaper and very common, however both real and faux leather have great appearance and provide a classy high society look to your handbags.

The material for the handbag is laid flat and the lacquer (like paint) is painted on and allowed to dry. Machines do this in many manufacturing processes. The picture is a tub of the lacquer (again its like paint) that is used on handbags, purses, shoes and many other everyday items. Here are some patent leather examples.

You must admit these bags are really sharp ladies so don’t let the manufacturing process scare you away from these beautiful types of bags.

Love Our Handbags Being Real – What does Faux Leather Mean?

5 Aug

Well we do it too, but we are upfront about it. A lot of handbag company’s use the words “faux leather” or “faux material” and so do we. We have even seen a bag company advertise “genuine faux leather”. That one was amazing to us.

The fact of the matter is faux means imitation or fake. It is a french term that is pronounced “foh” (with a long O), with the exact meaning of “false”.  Our industry has changed its meaning as if faux was an exotic material. It’s not. It does sound better that saying false or fake doesn’t it.

But LoveOurHandbags.com is being real and we use it because it does sound better, but it really means imitation of the real material, so faux leather means imitation leather or artificial leather. We provide the word faux leather in the title of the handbag, but we often say its synthetic or simulated leather as well.

As always please comment about our blog, we are always being real. Thanks for tuning in.

What is a “Kiss Lock” on a handbag

29 Jul

I know it goes without saying, but sometime when I was younger just starting out I would wonder about certain things that I read about handbags. I don’t know how old I was but I always wondered what Kiss Lock meant on handbags. I was too young to know then as I got older I figured it out. I was an early teenager or something like that.  So this post is for those of you older and younger ladies who still may wonder what a kiss lock is.

It is merely when the closure on a handbag is made to form usually two round balls who clasp together like a kiss and touch each other. That’s where the name comes from. This styling has been around for decades and is still being used today on some types of the more classic handbags. One reason is – it works well and it provides an easy opening while providing a secure closure. Kiss locks are smooth balls that are very comfortable to the touch to open and close.

Most of the kiss locks form with the two round balls, but there are squarer version as well and they typically are on clutch “smaller handsized” handbags. And if you don’t know what a clutch is that’s a future post.

Enjoy. Ms Trina President & CEO LoveOurHandbags.com
