Best Way to Wash Kinky Curly Hair

Fighting with your natural kinky curly hair can be a challenge. Here are some tips to tame the lioness hair with a regime geared toward having an amazing mane of hair that everyone will enjoy.

Consider going to the beauty salon but to save and make sure you are getting it done right do it yourself periodically. Even if you do use a salon ask questions about what they do.  It’s recommended for kinky curly hair to wash once a week. No more than that as washing can dry out this particular kind of hair. The great thing about kinky curly hair is it has a tendency to stay cleaner than say straight or wavy hair because it is not as oily. The oilier the hair the more quickly it gets dirty and retains dirt near the scalp. Kinky curly hair doesn’t have this problem so much.

Steps to Healthier Kinky Curly Hair

  1. Clean the Scalp, by washing with Aussie Moist Shampoo 13.50 oz $6 @ Amazon
  2. Shampoo in sections, don’t try to do the entire scalp all at once. This will allow you to deep clean and focus on the roots of the hair.
  3. Use gentle circular motion with the fingertips.
  4. Another option is to use a scalp massager such as Vanity Planet Groove Rejuvenating Scalp Massager, to truly get to the scalp and root of the hair. Again remember to be gentle.
  5. One technique that will save time and is effective is co-washing. This technique is shampooing with a conditioner that is specially formulated to condition and shampoo in one product. Great co-washing products are As I Am Coconut Co-wash Cleansing Conditioner, 16 Ounce $13 @ Amazon or Avlon Keracare Natural Textures Honey Shea Co-Wash -Size 8 oz $10 @ Amazon.
  6. Even if you co-wash once a week, try to straight shampoo a couple time a month. This will leave the hair in its best state. This is a great balance to ensure the hair isn’t over-conditioned (Yes that is possible) that may not allow shampoo to penetrate the shaft. Remember kinky curly hair generally isn’t as dirty as other hair to take it easy with shampooing and conditioning.
  7. This way I recommend a sulfate free shampoo such as Shea Moistures Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Shampoo $11 @ Ulta

To summarize, once a week and no more, be gentle, choose gentle hair products, focus on the roots via the scalp and walla, beautiful healthy kinky curly hair.
